TYPES OF SCAFFOLDING

If you’ve ever walked past a construction site and looked up at a scaffold, you’ve probably seen a maze of steel tubes, planks, and connectors — and wondered how it all fits together. Every scaffold, no matter how simple or complex, is built from a set of standard components, each with a specific job to do. Knowing what these parts are called, roughly how they’re sized, and what they do is essential for safe installation, proper assembly, and stable site operations.

Here’s a quick guide to the core components of a scaffolding system, from Wellmade Scaffolding.

1. Base Jack

Size: Commonly 600 mm / 750 mm adjustable screw jack

Function: The base jack sits at the very bottom of the scaffold. It levels the structure on uneven ground and transfers the entire load of the scaffold safely down to the ground.

2. Standard

Size: Commonly 48.3 mm diameter steel tube, available in various lengths

Function: Standards are the vertical tubes that form the backbone of the scaffold. They are the main load-bearing members, carrying the weight of the structure down to the base jacks.

3. Ledger

Size: Commonly 48.3 mm diameter; lengths vary by scaffold bay

Function: Ledgers run horizontally, connecting one standard to the next. They tie the vertical framework together and provide essential structural support across each bay.

4. Transom

Size: Commonly 48.3 mm diameter; length depends on platform width

Function: Transoms run across the width of the scaffold, sitting on top of or between the ledgers. They support the planks or platforms that workers stand and move on.

5. Brace

Size: Various lengths depending on scaffold height and bay configuration

Function: Braces run diagonally across the scaffold frame. They stop the structure from swaying or racking, adding vital stability and rigidity — especially as the scaffold gets taller.

6. Coupler

Size: Typically designed for 48.3 mm scaffold tubes

Function: Couplers are the connectors that hold the whole system together. Depending on the joint, they’re used as right-angle, swivel, or sleeve connections to securely link tubes at various angles.

7. Steel Plank

Size: Common widths of approximately 210–300 mm; lengths vary

Function: Steel planks form a durable, load-rated working platform where workers stand, move around, and stage tools and materials.

8. Wooden Plank / Scaffold Board

Size: Available in different lengths, widths, and thicknesses according to the approved specification

Function: Wooden planks or scaffold boards serve the same purpose as steel planks — providing a working surface — where they are approved for the specific scaffolding system and load requirements.

9. Stair Unit

Size: Available in different heights and widths depending on the scaffold system

Function: Stair units give workers a safe, convenient way to move between different levels of the scaffold, rather than climbing the frame itself.

10. Toe Board

Size: Height varies according to the applicable safety standard and system

Function: Fitted along the edges of platforms, toe boards act as a barrier that helps prevent tools, materials, and debris from falling and injuring people below.

11. Sheet / Mesh

Size: Supplied in rolls or panels according to scaffold dimensions

Function: Sheeting or mesh is fixed around the scaffold to help contain debris and shield the work area and surroundings from weather and dust.

12. Wall Tie

Size: Various lengths and configurations depending on the structure

Function: Wall ties anchor the scaffold to the building it’s erected against, significantly improving the overall stability of the structure.

13. Protector

Size: Available to suit standard scaffold tube ends

Function: Protectors cap exposed tube ends around the site, helping reduce the risk of impact injuries to workers and passersby.

Understanding these components isn’t just useful trivia — it’s the foundation of safe scaffold assembly. Each part plays a distinct structural or protective role, and using the wrong size, substituting an unapproved component, or skipping a piece altogether can compromise the stability of the entire system.
